New Westminster, also referred to as the Royal City was the first capital
city of British Columbia. There's a lot of history in this city.
When I was a boy I used to go "downtown" to Columbia St. in New Westminster.
It was a vibrant street with shops (Eatons, Army and Navy, Kelly's Records),
movie theatres (The Paramount and The Columbia), and lots of people walking
up and down the sidewalks on a Friday night. New Westminster has
fallen on quieter times in the past thirty years, as other areas in the
Vancouver area have grown. For a taste of its history check out Irving
House/New Westminster Museum. Irving House (former home of riverboat
captain William Irving) is a restored 14 room home furnished in the period
1864-1890. The museum building, adjacent to Irving House, has artifacts,
photos and materials relating to New Westminster's history.
Details: Open all year : May 1 - Mid-September: Tuesday - Sunday, 11 am - 5 pm; Mid-September - April 30: Saturday and Sunday, 1 pm - 5 pm.
